Ever bumped into an obstacle? Ever not enjoyed it?
One of the absolute best aspects of helping people with life coaching is watching obstacles fade away, every so often obstacles that have been a part of someone's life for years, decades even. Which at times makes people ask: how was it that it seemed such a problem??
Well I guess it's all a question of perception! Perception's a humorous old thing - we may "be aware" that there's a different way to look at things, and we may even "be aware" that that would get us good outcomes in life, but somehow belief often prefers to stay just the exact same as it's ever been.
Almost all of us are aware of scenarios where a person who feels he is not being recognized suitably and rewarded for his work and looks at that as an obstacle that can never be crossed - after all, if "they" can't see how good I am, there's no chance I'll be in a position to go up to my "rightful" place, is there?
It can appear like rock-solid reality!
And yet it's just belief. What if "they" in reality think I'm fantastic at my job and are going to promote me the moment someone else moves on? What if they're right and that, in fact, I'm not living up to my capability to be the great worker that they need me to be? What if the only thing that's stopping them is my tiresome sufferer mentality? What if the person who's really undervaluing me is …
me?
This does not only relate to work, of course.
Are there any hikers out there? Hiking is a fantastic opportunity to experience the beauty and magnificence of this planet we live on, and to go out of our "comfort" (inertia?) zone and grow - becoming fitter, healthier, more strong-minded, more focused, and perhaps even intelligent!
Not everyone feels the same way about this, obviously. A typical hiking menu is expected also to include blisters, rain, heat, cold, heavy backpacks, uncomfortable nights in a tent, coupled with mountains that take a lot of energy to climb up, and streams that are icy and deep and for some reason don't appear to have a bridge built over them even though you really need to get to the other side.
And it's certainly one option to look at all this as being firmly in the "don't even want to think about going there" category. Because it's definitely not all "amusing".
Now, if you've come across the life coaching scene in the Sound of Music, you may remember that just when Maria is in a completely stuck space, unsure of her life direction, the Mother Superior (head nun) unexpectedly bursts into song:
"Climb every mountain, ford every stream!"
I don't know if she was a hiker, but it's a brilliant metaphor! Yes, life comes with its challenges and obstacles. Yes, they will be things that you might not choose for yourself. But how much more manageable they can be, fun even, if we perceive them like a hike!
Life may not at all times be a walk in the park, but it can every time be a hike in the mountains.
